ENVIRONMENTAL AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE AGRICULTURE MANAGER Full Time

Purpose

The Environmental NBS and Climate Resilience Agriculture Manager will be responsible for the planning, coordination, and implementation of climate adaptation interventions that integrate nature-based solutions (NbS) and climate-resilient agricultural practices across target coastal communities in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. This role will contribute to reducing the impacts of climate change—such as coastal erosion, flooding, heatwaves and variability in rainfall—by promoting sustainable land use systems, restoring degraded ecosystems (e.g., mangroves), and enhancing community livelihoods.

Working closely with the civil works manager and other technical team members, the Manager will lead green infrastructure activities, including mangrove reforestation and soil and water conservation measures, while simultaneously promoting sustainable and resilient agriculture through crop diversification, adaptive technologies, value-added processing, best available practices and market linkages. The role involves direct field implementation in 10 Ivorian communities and remote technical supervision for 11 communities in Ghana.

The Manager will also play a key role in stakeholder engagement, including local governments, landowners, farmers, and community-based organizations/NGOs/Associations, ensuring that all activities are environmentally sound, socially inclusive, and aligned with project goals. This position is pivotal in building resilient local economies, strengthening ecosystem services, and supporting sustainable livelihoods under the Adaptation Fund’s broader objective to foster climate-resilient settlements in targeted West Africa’s coastal communities.

Duties

• Oversee the planning, coordination, and field execution of interventions such as mangrove nursery settlement, mangrove reforestation, sustainable land use practices, green infrastructure, crop diversification, and soil and water management and conservation, ensuring alignment with project objectives, framework, outcomes and timelines.
• Establish training centers and model plots for adaptive agriculture and NbS practices; design and deliver participatory learning activities to enhance community knowledge on climate adaptation, carbon credits, and agroecological methods.
• Identify and promote opportunities such as value-added agricultural processing, available best practices and technologies, local agribusiness development, and market access strategies to strengthen rural economies and ecosystem services.
• Supervise consultants and contractors and collaborate with the civil works manager to review technical designs; set up systems for monitoring output and impact indicators; ensure adherence to environmental and social policies and regulations, including project quality standards.
• Liaise with local and national government agencies, landowners, community-based organizations, and other actors to facilitate inclusive participative planning, local ownership, and long-term sustainability of project interventions.
• Offer guidance and experience-sharing with the Ghana counterpart team to harmonize approaches, ensure technical consistency, and encourage replication and adaptation of successful practices across both countries.
• Identify strategies and implement mitigation measures for potential environmental and social risks and negative impacts; ensure that interventions are climate-smart, low-emission, and contribute to national adaptation strategy outcomes and environmental goals.
• Develop and deliver communication materials and approved channels, targeted awareness campaigns, and community dialogues to foster local ownership of environmental stewardship, increase adoption of resilient agricultural best practices and technologies, and enhance understanding of the benefits of NBS and sustainable land management in coastal context.
• Other duties if required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in agronomy, forestry, natural resources management, environmental science, GIS/Geography or a related field.
• Knowledge of climate change adaptation principles related to agriculture, ecosystems, and natural resources management.
• Fluency in English and French (local language knowledge will be a plus).

Minimum Requirements:

• Minimum of 5-7 years of professional experience in planning, implementation, and evaluation of climate-resilient agriculture, nature-based solutions and/or reforest projects, particularly in coastal and/or lagoon areas.
• Proven experience in managing field-based projects focused on sustainable agriculture, reforestation, agroecology, or NBS within international development contexts.
• Proficiency in environmental monitoring, evaluation and reporting.
• Strong knowledge of environmental regulations, guidelines, and best practices, including donors E&S Frameworks (World Bnak Group’s ESF, IFC Standards and EHS Guidelines, Adaptation ESSS, AfDB’s ISS, etc).
• Ability to conduct environmental potential risks and negative impacts assessments and develop mitigation plans (ESMP).
• Experience working in the Cote ‘d’Ivoire and Ghana will be an added advantage

• Excellent communication and negotiation skills for working with diverse stakeholders, including local communities and government agencies.

Preferred Requirements

• Advanced degree (at least Master’s) in a relevant field (agriculture, environmental science, natural resource management, climate adaptation, etc.)
• Experience in designing or managing projects that integrate environmental and livelihoods dimensions under a resilience framework.
