GEE Specialist/Geologist – Mozambique Full Time

Aim of the position:

The main role of the GEE Specialist/Geologist is to provide advanced technical and scientific expertise for the implementation of the project “Sustainable Agriculture and Land Management (SALM)”. The Specialist supports the Project Manager by applying innovative digital tools (GIS, GEE and related technologies) and conducting soil, climate and land-use analysis to ensure evidence-based decision-making and effective monitoring, reporting and verification processes.

1. Contributing to the overall donor’s decarbonization targets through the generation of carbon credits by virtue of the utilization of SALM method. All credits generated will be registered and certified according to the highest standards provided by Verra, one of the most important international registries operating in the voluntary carbon market, such as VCS (Verified Carbon Standard) and SD Vista (Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard).
2. Promote local development through the reduction of deforestation and forest degradation avoiding carbon emissions with preserving and protecting biodiversity in Mozambique.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

• Identifying, developing and managing geographical information: acquisition, collection, creation, editing, analysis and synthesis of data within GIS and GEE (Google Earth Engine; https://earthengine.google.com/) applications.
• Conduct detailed studies and geological-pedological analyses (classification, texture, CO2 accumulation potential), climate, rainfall, land cover, erosion, etc., using the latest available technologies.
• Support digital transformation by integrating cutting-edge technologies (e.g. GEE) for collecting data on soils and crops in combination with forest species.
• Making harvest estimates, weather forecasts, and cross-referencing different types of data.
• Support the PM in following the project’s progress step by step in spatial terms, providing scientific support for the choices made, and eventually engaging in peer-to-peer discussions with donor’s geologists.
• Contribute to the dissemination of know-how in the field of expertise by participating in the development and promotion of solutions and technologies aimed at digital optimisation that simplify the monitoring and traceability of production.
• Actively support the development of projects and the implementation of innovative ideas within the AVSI global team.
• Support and assist the Project Manager in technical and practical aspects of implementation.

Essential Requirements

• Master’s degree in Geology, Agricultural Sciences, Geography and Territorial Sciences. Applications with different and lower qualifications may also be considered, provided that the applicant has significant professional experience. A PhD in relevant disciplines cold be considered as an advantage
• At least 5 years of relevant experience in managing or supporting agriculture and/or similar experiences in development cooperation, private sector or PhD
• At least 3 years’ experience in conducting analyses for agricultural and/or agroforestry projects in the field of soil science, in tropical and subtropical environments
• Advanced knowledge of territorial analysis systems (QGIS, ArcGIS, GEE)
• Good command of IT tools for analysing agricultural, climatic, soil and other data
• Previous experience in crop management and crop yield prediction models
• Knowledge of Portuguese and English or at least 2 Latin languages

Other required skills and experiences:

• Ability to work in a multicultural team and manage activities with external stakeholders
• Experience in Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) or a community-centered process for land planning and land use is considered an added value
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office
