About IUCN
IUCN is a membership Union uniquely composed of both government and civil society organisations. It provides public, private and non-governmental organisations with the knowledge and tools that enable human progress, economic development and nature conservation to take place together.
Created in 1948, IUCN is now the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network, harnessing the knowledge, resources and reach of more than 1,400 Member organisations and around 15,000 experts. It is a leading provider of conservation data, assessments and analysis. Its broad membership enables IUCN to fill the role of incubator and trusted repository of best practices, tools and international standards.
IUCN provides a neutral space in which diverse stakeholders including governments, NGOs, scientists, businesses, local communities, indigenous peoples’ organisations and others can work together to forge and implement solutions to environmental challenges and achieve sustainable development.
Working with many partners and supporters, IUCN implements a large and diverse portfolio of conservation projects worldwide. Combining the latest science with the traditional knowledge of local communities, these projects work to reverse habitat loss, restore ecosystems and improve people’s well-being.

About the Project
Pamoja Tuhifadhi Bahari Yetu (BY) Project is a four-year initiative (2024–2028) implemented by IUCN, TNC, WCS, WWF, FORUMCC, and government counterparts in Mainland Tanzania (through the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries-MLF) and Zanzibar (through the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries-MOBEF). The project aims to:
Improve environmental protection and biodiversity conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems.
Strengthen community-led coastal forest resource management.
Reduce plastic pollution in rivers, estuaries, and the marine environment; and
Enhance institutional and research capacity for coastal and marine resource management.
The project is structured around five work packages (WP), each of which is implemented by a distinct partner, and, when necessary, by two partners, to achieve the outcomes. The WPs are in the following areas: protection of marine resources and biodiversity, strengthening of community-led management of coastal forests, prevention of plastic litter in marine and estuary water bodies, enhancement of institutional capacities for the research, monitoring, surveillance, and management of coastal and marine resources, and the last is project management, coordination, and acceleration of impact. Work Package 3 of the Bahari Yetu Project aims to strengthens NEMC’s capacity on enforcement of policies and regulations on marine plastic litter in marine and estuarine ecosystems. As part of this, the project will assist NEMC with Mapping and Inspections Dorone systems that will assist in providing valuable real-time data to track pollution trends, enhance monitoring capabilities, and guide decision-making. The data will also inform evidence-based policy development, improve enforcement strategies and ensure that interventions are grounded in accurate information to effectively reduce plastic waste.
