Position: Police Duty Solicitor

Based: Kaduna, Nigeria

Global Rights is an international human rights capacity-building non-governmental organization (NGO). Global Rights was founded in Washington DC, USA in 1978 with the name International Human Rights Law Group and changed its name to Global Rights: Partners for Justice in 2003 at its 25th anniversary. Global Rights works with local activists in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to promote and protect the rights of marginalized populations. We provide technical assistance and training to enable local partners document and expose human rights abuses, conduct community outreach and mobilization, advocate for legal and policy reform, and provide legal and paralegal services.

The Police Duty Solicitor will provide pro bono, timely, and rights-based legal assistance to survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) at designated police stations. The role involves legal representation, advocacy, and close coordination with justice sector actors to ensure survivors access needed legal and psychosocial support services

Key Responsibilities:

1. Provide free legal advice and support to survivors of SGBV at police stations.
2. Represent clients during police questions, bail hearings, and other relevant legal procedures.
3. Facilitate referrals to courts, Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs), and other justice-related services.
4. Maintain accurate and confidential records of all legal services and client interactions.
5. Collaborate with law enforcement officers, SARCs, and community response teams to improve survivor outcomes.
6. Participate in trainings related to SGBV, trauma-informed care, legal ethics, and community justice.
7. Prepare and submit timely reports and updates to the project team as required

Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and Barrister-at-Law (BL); must be called to the Nigerian Bar.
• Minimum of 3 years’ post-call experience, preferably in criminal law, human rights law, or legal aid work.
• Demonstrated experience working with survivors of SGBV or other vulnerable groups is a strong advantage.
• Strong understanding of Nigerian legal and criminal justice systems, especially as they relate to gender justice.
• Knowledge of English and Hausa
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
