Position Summary
The WASH Assistant will support in implementation, monitoring, and engagement with project stakeholders on WASH interventions. S/he will participate in the community engagement and mobilization for all water supply and hygiene activities.
The WASH Assistant shall provide necessary support to the WASH and Construction Engineer in the design, planning and implementation. She/he will ensure that an engagement approach to working with communities, the local authorities, partners, and other stakeholders is employed, and all activities are carried out in a way that is sensitive to community needs and promotes the full and equal participation of women, men, children, and youth.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
1. Project planning and design
-Support in the planning, Design and follow up on the community WASH infrastructure, sanitation and Hygiene initiatives.
-Support in the project baseline assessments and proposal development for proposal development and project implementation.
2. Project implementation
-Ensure community mobilization in all field activities related to water supply, hygiene and sanitation are conducted.
-Support condition assessment of WASH facilities in communities, schools and Health Care facilities and prepare detailed reports to support rehabilitation existing and construction new facilities.
-Carry out field supervision of WASH facilities rehabilitation and constructions.
-Lead the formation/re-activation and training of community Water and sanitation Committees (WSC), Hygiene, Sanitation and environment Clubs/committees and youth groups in schools, Healthcare facilities and communities.
-Represent ForAfrika in district WASH coordination and WASH sector group meetings.
-In consultation with WASH and Construction Officer plan, organize and evaluate the distribution of all Water Sanitation and hygiene supplies.
-Conduct routine follow up of community and school’s hygiene promotion activities to ensure they keep on climbing the sanitation ladder.
-In consultation with WASH Hygiene officer plan, organize and evaluate the distribution of all hygiene supplies.
-Perform any other duties when required by the supervisor.
3.Project monitoring and evaluation
-Ensure that up to date project documents are in place including approved work plans, log frame, detailed project implementation plan, distribution lists.
-Support in the documentation and filing of minutes, lessons learnt and good practices during project meetings, community meetings and trainings.
-In consultation with MEAL, conduct all quantitative and qualitative assessments, KAP surveys, and follow-up assessments with concrete feedback findings.
Physical Demands
-While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is required to travel from place to place, while interfacing with program participants and the various stakeholders. Therefore, they MUST be able to ride a motorbike and possess a VALID riding permit
-The employee should be willing to reside within the settlement/ camp.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
-A Certificate/diploma/degree in social work, Water Engineering, Environmental science/engineering or other related courses is required.
-A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in WASH with NGOs, IDAs, Government of private companies.
-Experience working in donor funded projects.
-Knowledge of Sanitation ladder and experience implementing the various hygiene promotion approaches including CLTS, PHAST, CHAST etc.
-Experience implementing WASH activities in refugee communities is a huge advantage.
-Ability to ride a motorcycle over long distances (at least 150km per day) with a valid license.
-Knowledge safe water chain and household treatment of water.
-Ability to speak at least one of the following languages: Kakwa, Lugbara, Madi and Arabic is of advantage.
-Knowledge and experience implementing soil, water and environmental conservation activities in communities in schools.
-Ability to lead and manage a team of VHTs and CBFs to ensure they perform optimally
-Good communication skills
