Multimedia Communication Officer Full Time

The UN Volunteer will be part of the Communications Unit at the WHO Regional Office for Africa, supporting the Regional Director, senior management, technical programmes, health emergency operations and country offices. The role contributes to the Unit’s regional communications project by producing audiovisual and multimedia content, digital and web materials, leadership messaging, social media assets and event coverage that communicate WHO’s work and public health guidance. Working with stakeholders across the Regional Office and country offices, the Communications Unit role is to strengthen public health advocacy, resource mobilization, and the visibility, credibility and impact of WHO’s work across the African Region.

Purpose of the assignment:
The United Nations Volunteer will support the recording, editing, production, and management of audiovisual content produced by the Communications Unit. The incumbent will also provide graphic design support for video thumbnails, social media products, visual explainers, and other communication assets. The UN Volunteer will contribute to maintaining timely and reliable audiovisual production services, including during periods of increased demand or temporary absence of the staff member responsible for this function.

Reporting and supervision:
The United Nations Volunteer will work under the overall supervision of the Head of the Communications Unit. Day-to-day technical guidance, work planning, task assignment, and quality assurance will be provided by the staff member responsible for web and audiovisual production. All content will be subject to the applicable World Health Organization (WHO ) editorial, technical, and managerial review and approval processes prior to publication.

Duties and responsibilities:
Within the delegated authority and under the supervision described above, the United Nations Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

1) Audiovisual recording: Record interviews, statements, leadership messages, presentations, meetings, events, and other assigned audiovisual content. Operate cameras, microphones, lighting, teleprompters, and related audiovisual equipment. Support recordings conducted in the communications studio, meeting rooms, offices, and external locations. Assess recording locations and recommend appropriate camera, lighting, and sound arrangements. Ensure that recordings meet required standards for image quality, sound, framing, lighting, and composition. Support remote recordings conducted through approved digital platforms. Support livestreamed, virtual, and hybrid communication activities when required.

2) Video editing and post-production: Edit interviews, institutional videos, public health stories, leadership messages, event highlights, documentaries, and other assigned productions. Produce short-form adaptations of longer content for social media and digital platforms. Select relevant sequences and excerpts in consultation with communication and technical colleagues. Incorporate approved titles, subtitles, captions, lower thirds, logos, credits, transitions, and motion graphics. Perform colour correction, sound enhancement, image stabilization, and other necessary post-production adjustments. Adapt videos to the formats, aspect ratios, and technical specifications required for WHO websites, YouTube, X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other approved channels. Export and compress final products while maintaining appropriate image and sound quality. Incorporate review comments and deliver final approved versions within agreed deadlines. Ensure that editing does not alter, distort, or misrepresent approved public health information.

3) Visual storytelling: Work with communication officers and technical experts to translate complex public health information into clear and engaging audiovisual content. Contribute to the preparation of scripts, storyboards, shot lists, and visual treatments. Recommend appropriate footage, graphics, text, sound, and visual elements. Identify opportunities to repurpose existing footage for campaigns, reports, and social media. Apply ethical storytelling principles, particularly when content involves patients, children, vulnerable populations, emergencies, or affected communities. Ensure respect for dignity, privacy, informed consent, cultural sensitivity, and the principle of “do no harm”. Use only authorized music, footage, photographs, fonts, and creative assets.

4) Graphic design: Design video thumbnails and cover images. Produce social media cards, quote cards, campaign visuals, event graphics, and other supporting assets. Develop simple infographics and visual explainers based on approved content. Adapt graphics to the sizes and technical formats required for different platforms. Ensure that visual products are clear, accurate, accessible, and compliant with WHO’s visual identity. Prepare and maintain editable source files and final publication files.

5) Equipment and studio support: Support the operation of the Communications Unit’s audiovisual studio. Prepare, test, install, and safely store audiovisual equipment. Conduct routine checks of cameras, microphones, lighting equipment, batteries, storage media, cables, and accessories. Maintain an updated inventory of equipment placed under the incumbent’s responsibility. Report damaged, missing, or malfunctioning equipment promptly. Recommend practical improvements to production processes and studio configuration.

6) Digital asset management: Organize raw footage, project files, photographs, graphics, and final audiovisual products. Apply agreed file-naming, folder structure, metadata, and version-control conventions. Maintain appropriate backups of active production files. Transfer approved products and reusable assets to the relevant institutional repositories. Facilitate retrieval and reuse of archived content. Respect WHO requirements relating to confidentiality, privacy, copyright, consent, data protection, and information security.

7) Coordination and reporting: Review assigned production requests and clarify their objective, audience, format, deadline, and approval process. Develop realistic production schedules in consultation with the supervisor. Provide regular updates on completed, ongoing, and pending assignments. Coordinate with communication officers, technical experts, translators, interpreters, photographers, and external service providers as required. Contribute to the documentation of recurring production workflows and procedures. Perform other related communication and multimedia duties assigned by the supervisor.

8) Expected results and outputs: The United Nations Volunteer will contribute to the following results: Assigned recordings are completed professionally and within agreed timelines. Videos are edited accurately and delivered in formats suitable for publication. Short-form and platform-specific adaptations are produced as required. Video thumbnails and related graphic assets are delivered with audiovisual products. WHO editorial, technical, ethical, accessibility, and visual identity standards are consistently applied. Studio equipment and production assets are properly prepared, handled, and stored. Raw footage, project files, and final products are systematically organized and archived. Essential audiovisual services remain available during periods of increased workload or staff absence. Specific targets will be established through periodic workplans agreed with the supervisor.
