Applying to lots of jobs and zero replies. Decode the job description for what they are actually looking for

Applying for remote jobs is a full-time job in itself. How many job applications can you send with little to no responses before becoming totally disillusioned? 200 applications. 3 replies. That ratio comes up again and again when job seekers write to us. Sometimes it’s 150 and 2, sometimes 300 and 5, but the shape is always the same: months of effort, and almost nothing coming back.

And the silence is the part that does the real damage. The worst part of job hunting isn’t rejection. It’s silence. Rejection stings, but at least it’s information: the process ended, you can close the tab and move on. Silence gives you nothing. You spend an evening tailoring a CV, write the cover letter, hit submit, and never hear another word. Not even a no. Multiply that by fifty, and it’s hard not to be disillusioned.

So let’s take a step back and see what we can change to improve our response rate and get that remote job you are after.

No feedback means no way to improve

There’s a second cost to the silence that gets talked about less. When every application disappears into the void, you have no idea what you’re doing wrong.

Was it the CV format, the cover letter, a keyword some filter wanted? You can’t tell, so you change things at random. New template, new headline, a rewritten summary, and then another fifty applications go out into the same silence. In most skilled work, you improve because someone or something tells you where you’re falling short. Modern hiring removed that loop entirely. You’re expected to get better at a game where nobody shows you the score.

Why this is happening

But the numbers say it isn’t personal, and it usually isn’t your CV either. Most applications fail before they’re sent, because the job was never a real match, and nothing in the process told you.

The listing asked for “5+ years in a fast-paced environment” and what it meant was “we need someone who has done X specifically, and we’ll bin everyone else in 30 seconds.” Job ads are written as wish-lists: fifteen bullet points, most of them padding. Underneath, the hiring team is usually screening for two or three things. If you have them, you’re in with a real chance. If you don’t, no amount of polish will save the application.

Running EU Remote Jobs, we’ve seen tens of thousands of these listings come through from Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever and Workable. Read enough of them and you start to see what a team is actually hiring for underneath the boilerplate. Job seekers can’t see this from the outside. So they apply to everything plausible, hear nothing back from most of it, and start to wonder what’s wrong with them.

Nothing is wrong with them. They’re aiming most of their effort at jobs that were never going to reply.

What actually helps: aim before you apply

Every piece of standard job-search advice pushes volume. Apply to more jobs, faster, with better templates. But volume is exactly how we ended up here: hiring teams drowning in hundreds of applications per role, and candidates hearing back from almost none of them. More volume isn’t the fix. Aiming is.

Before you spend an evening on an application, read the listing the way the hiring team will read your CV. Ignore the wish-list and ask: what are the two or three things this role cannot function without? They’re usually visible if you look past the boilerplate, in the responsibilities rather than the requirements, in what’s mentioned twice, in the specifics hiding between generic phrases. Then be honest with yourself: can you point to concrete evidence that you’ve done those things? Not adjacent things, those things.

If the answer is yes, that evidence is your application. Lead with it, point by point, and skip the buzzwords. If the answer is no, the hard truth is that this application will most likely join the silent pile, and your evening is better spent on a role where the answer is yes.

Nine well-aimed applications, each backed by evidence the hiring team actually cares about, will beat 87 hopeful ones. Fewer, better applications. That’s the whole shift.

Something is coming

Doing that analysis properly takes judgment, and it’s hard to be objective about your own experience, especially fifty applications deep, when everything starts to blur. So we’ve been building something that does it with you: an honest answer on where your applications stand before you send them, built on everything we’ve learned from five years of reading European remote job listings.

It’s in final testing now and should launch next week. We’re opening it at a discounted rate for early users, and the waitlist is open.
