Empowering societies to manage natural resources for public benefit
The Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) was established in 2013 following the merger of the Revenue Watch Institute and the Natural Resource Charter. With its headquarters in New York, NRGI operates globally with a significant focus on Africa, aiming to improve governance in resource-rich countries. Its mission is to ensure that countries rich in oil, gas, and minerals achieve sustainable development and that their resources contribute to public welfare.
NRGI works by providing technical assistance, research, and advocacy to empower citizens and governments. It has made substantial impacts through its flagship Resource Governance Index, which assesses the quality of governance in the extractive sector. NRGI’s efforts have reached numerous African countries, influencing policy reforms and enhancing transparency and accountability in natural resource management.
NRGI has a strong presence in Africa, with regional hubs in Ghana and Tanzania. It works extensively in countries like Nigeria, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, focusing on improving governance in the extractive industries.
NRGI’s key initiatives include the Resource Governance Index and the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) support. It provides funding and technical assistance to governments and civil society organizations to enhance resource governance.
NRGI has significantly contributed to policy reforms in several African countries, improving transparency and accountability in the extractive sector. Its Resource Governance Index is a critical tool for assessing and improving governance practices worldwide.
