Mothers2mothers (m2m) is an African-based NGO that has been at the forefront of preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV since its inception in 2001. Founded in Cape Town, South Africa, the organization employs and trains HIV-positive mothers as community health workers, known as Mentor Mothers, who provide education and support to women and their families. This innovative model not only helps to reduce the transmission of HIV but also empowers women by providing them with employment and leadership opportunities.
Over the years, m2m has expanded its mission to include a broader range of health and social issues, such as early childhood development, adolescent health, and family health. By integrating these services, m2m addresses the holistic needs of families and communities, contributing to the overall socio-economic development of the regions they serve.
Mothers2mothers has been recognized for its innovative approach to healthcare, significantly reducing the rates of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in the regions it operates. The organization has expanded its reach across multiple African countries, impacting millions of lives through its comprehensive health and social programs. m2m’s model has been adopted by various health organizations globally, showcasing its effectiveness and scalability.
