Science for resilient livelihoods in dry areas
The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) was established in 1977 to address the challenges faced by agriculture in dry regions. With its headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon, ICARDA operates across North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, focusing on improving the livelihoods of rural communities. Its mission is to enhance food security and alleviate poverty through innovative agricultural research and sustainable practices tailored to arid environments.
ICARDA’s operations span over 40 countries, impacting millions of farmers and communities. The organization is renowned for its research in crop improvement, water management, and climate resilience. Key programs include the development of drought-resistant crop varieties and integrated pest management systems. ICARDA’s work has significantly contributed to increased agricultural productivity and sustainability, thereby supporting socio-economic growth in some of the world’s most vulnerable regions.
ICARDA’s work is concentrated in dry areas across North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. Key regional hubs include countries like Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, and Jordan. The organization collaborates with national agricultural research systems, universities, and international partners to implement its programs effectively.
ICARDA leads several flagship initiatives, including the development of climate-smart agriculture practices and the introduction of resilient crop varieties. It also offers funding opportunities through collaborative projects with governments and international donors, aiming to enhance agricultural innovation and capacity building in dry regions.
ICARDA has achieved significant milestones, such as the release of over 900 improved crop varieties and the implementation of water-saving technologies. Its research outputs have led to increased crop yields and improved food security for millions of people living in arid and semi-arid regions.
