The African Development Bank Group generally refers to three distinct legal entities: the African Development Bank (“ADB”), Africa’s premier development finance institution; the African Development Fund (“ADF” or the “Fund”) and the Nigeria Trust Fund (“NTF”).
The main objective of the Bank Group is to contribute to sustainable economic growth and social progress of African countries as well as to promote cooperation and international trade across the African continent. The Bank Group mobilises resources, provides financing, and delivers technical expertise to support transformative development in its African member countries (regional member countries).
Headquartered in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the Bank Group is a trusted partner to governments, the private sector and development institutions. Guided by a vision of a prosperous and integrated Africa, it works to reduce poverty, foster inclusive development and improve the quality of life for people across the continent through strategic investments, sound policies and strong partnerships.
The purpose of the African Development Bank is to spur sustainable economic development and social progress in its regional members individually and jointly while that of the African Development Fund is to make an increasingly effective contribution to the economic and social development of the Bank’s members and the promotion of cooperation (including regional and sub-regional co-operation) and increased international trade, particularly among such members. The Fund provides finance on concessional terms for purposes which are of primary importance for and serve such development.
Founded in 1964, the AfDB brings together 54 regional member countries and 27 non-African countries (“non-regional member countries”) from the Americas, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. This broad membership underpins the Bank Group’s capital base and ensures its work reflects the needs and aspirations of its members, while fostering collaboration among nations within Africa and beyond. Founded in 1972, the ADF is currently made up of 29 State participants and 24 regional donors. The ADF contributes to poverty reduction and economic and social development in the least developed African countries by providing concessional funding for projects and programmes, as well as technical assistance for studies and capacity-building activities.
The NTF was established in 1976 by agreement between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the AfDB; to assist the development efforts of the Bank’s low-income regional countries whose economic and social conditions and prospects require concessional financing.
