Catalyzing innovative business ideas for sustainable growth in Africa.
The Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF) is a development institution that aims to stimulate private sector entrepreneurship and innovation across Africa. Established in 2008, it provides catalytic funding to businesses in the agribusiness, renewable energy, and climate adaptation sectors, with a focus on empowering marginalized communities. AECF’s mission is to reduce poverty by supporting the private sector to innovate and create jobs, thereby driving economic growth and improving livelihoods. It achieves this by offering grants and non-repayable loans to businesses that demonstrate potential for significant social impact.
Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, AECF operates across various African countries, focusing on regions where poverty is most prevalent. The fund has supported over 300 businesses, impacting millions of lives through job creation and improved access to essential services. AECF’s approach is unique in that it leverages private sector solutions to address development challenges, ensuring sustainability and scalability. By fostering partnerships with governments, NGOs, and other stakeholders, AECF enhances its impact and contributes to the broader development agenda in Africa.
AECF operates in multiple African countries, with a strong presence in East, West, and Southern Africa.
AECF offers various funding windows and competitions aimed at different sectors, including agribusiness innovation and renewable energy solutions. These programs are designed to identify and support high-potential businesses that can deliver social and economic impact.
Since its inception, AECF has disbursed over $356 million, supporting more than 300 businesses and impacting over 28 million lives. The fund’s interventions have led to the creation of thousands of jobs and improved access to energy and agricultural services.
