Enhancing African security through academic and strategic engagement
The Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS) was established in 1999 as a premier institution for strategic security studies in Africa. Based in Washington, D.C., it operates under the United States Department of Defense. The center’s mission is to enhance African security by fostering academic and strategic engagement among African military and civilian leaders. Through its programs, ACSS aims to build strong partnerships and promote democratic governance across the continent.
ACSS conducts a wide range of programs, including seminars, workshops, and research initiatives, impacting thousands of African leaders annually. Its flagship programs focus on counterterrorism, maritime security, and transnational threats, contributing significantly to regional stability. By facilitating dialogue and knowledge exchange, ACSS plays a crucial role in shaping security policies and strengthening institutional capacities across Africa.
ACSS primarily serves the African continent, with a focus on engaging leaders from all regions, including North, West, East, Central, and Southern Africa. It has established regional hubs and partnerships to facilitate its programs and outreach efforts.
ACSS offers key programs such as the Senior Leaders Seminar, the Next Generation of African Security Sector Leaders Program, and workshops on countering violent extremism. These initiatives are designed to foster collaboration and provide strategic insights to African security professionals.
ACSS has successfully engaged over 8,000 African leaders through its programs, contributing to enhanced security cooperation and policy development. Its impact is recognized in improved governance and strategic partnerships across the continent.
