Consultant – Fruit & Vegetable processing
Full-time or part-time
Background:
The Center mobilizes resources from the public and private sector to realize the potential of vegetables for healthier lives and more resilient livelihoods. WorldVeg’s regional office for Eastern and Southern Africa is implementing the WorldBank-funded project ‘Facilitating value addition and processing in the context of the cassava, maize, banana, vegetable, and livestock value chains (PRODEMA)’ in Burundi. As part of PRODEMA, WorldVeg seeks a Consultant to coordinate activities in the fruit and vegetable value chains for one and a half years. The duty station is Arusha, Tanzania, but under certain circumstances may be conducted home-based.
Key responsibilities:
Lead a team of colleagues, implementing partners, consultants and local government partners in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the PRODEMA Project in Burundi through day-to-day supervision of project activities.
Manage the budget allocated for the different activities and provide required information for financial reporting.
Coordinate:
- Identification of beneficiary producer groups;
- Market and business analysis for processing units (collection centers, packhouses, solar dryers, juice production units, jam production units);
- Establishment of production and construction plans for processing units;
- Sourcing of quotations for equipment and the construction of processing units;
- Monitoring of the progress of construction of processing units;
- Development of training manuals for trainers to train producers on good agricultural and processing practices;
- Implementation of trainer-of-trainees programs;
- Dissemination of training materials for producers;
- Identification and implementation of sub-projects;
- Monitoring of the functioning of processing units and the technical assistance to producer groups.
Provide quarterly technical reports answering the requirements of the donor.
Perform other duties as may be assigned by the WorldVeg supervisor or his/her appointed representative.
Skills, knowledge and qualifications
- At least an MSc in food engineering or related topic.
- At least 2 years of extensive project coordination experience in food processing.
- Proven experience in commercial fruit and vegetable processing. Experiences in commercial post-harvest storage and juice production will be a strong asset.
- Proven experience in setting up commercial fruit and vegetable processing units.
- Good agronomic background with a focus on horticultural value chains is a plus.
- Excellent knowledge on processing processes, certification procedures, and HACCP methods.
- Experience in production of training materials and in the implementation of training.
- Strong written and spoken English and French language skills.
- Skills in teamwork, partnership building and project management, as well as supervisory and mentoring skills.
- Proven interpersonal skills and ability to interact with public, private, and civil society leaders and groups on data collection and surveying for project monitoring is an advantage.
