Harnessing water resources for sustainable development in Lesotho.
The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) is responsible for the implementation, operation, and maintenance of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP), a multi-phased project aimed at harnessing the water resources of the highlands of Lesotho. The project is a joint venture between the governments of Lesotho and South Africa, primarily focused on providing water to the Gauteng region of South Africa while generating hydroelectric power for Lesotho. The LHDA’s vision is to drive sustainable economic growth through the responsible management of Lesotho’s water resources, ensuring environmental conservation and socio-economic benefits for the local communities.
The LHDA has been instrumental in the successful implementation of the first phase of the LHWP, which significantly increased water supply to South Africa and provided Lesotho with a reliable source of hydroelectric power. The project has contributed to the socio-economic development of Lesotho by creating jobs and improving infrastructure. Environmental conservation efforts have been integrated into project planning to mitigate ecological impacts, ensuring sustainable development outcomes.
