The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) was established in 1998 as a response to the civil conflicts that plagued West Africa in the 1990s. With a vision to promote peace and security in the region, WANEP has grown into a leading peacebuilding organization, fostering collaboration among civil society organizations, governments, and international partners. Its mission is to enable and facilitate the development of mechanisms for cooperation among civil society-based peacebuilding practitioners and organizations in West Africa by promoting cooperative responses to violent conflicts.
WANEP’s impact is profound, as it has been instrumental in conflict prevention, management, and resolution across the region. It has established a robust network that empowers communities, builds capacities, and advocates for policies that promote sustainable peace. Through its strategic partnerships, WANEP has contributed significantly to the socio-economic stability of West African nations by addressing root causes of conflict and promoting dialogue and reconciliation.
WANEP is recognized as a pivotal player in the peacebuilding landscape of West Africa. Its strategic interventions have been acknowledged by regional bodies such as ECOWAS and the African Union. The organization has successfully facilitated dialogue processes and contributed to the reduction of violence in several hotspots across the region. WANEP’s early warning system is considered one of the most effective in Africa, providing timely and actionable intelligence to prevent conflicts.
