Sudan’s conflict, begun on April 15, 2023, has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. According to the United Nations, more than 11.7 million people have been displaced, including 4.2 million who have fled to neighboring countries. The takeover by the Rapid Support Forces of El Fasher, North Darfur, toward the end of October 2025 has brought another turning point to the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world. The city remains closed, with food, medicine, and relief supplies blocked despite urgent appeals for access.
The takeover has worsened conditions in an area already devastated by sustained conflict. Fighting in and around the city resulted in the displacement of more than 450,000 people, driving most of those who are able to seek refuge in Al Tawila locality. Due to its proximity to the frontlines, services in Al Tawila are quite limited, and operational partners are unable to cope with the magnitude of the need, given the influx of displaced families and individuals. The movement of populations from El Fasher has also spilled over to other areas, such as in the east and central Jebel Mara region. Central Jebel Mara, where International Medical Corps is supporting Golo hospital and eight other primary healthcare facilities, has seen an increase in the utilization of health services by newly arrived internally displaced persons (IDPs).
